Sexy Flight Attendants

Entrepreneur Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao is set to become Vietnam's first female billionaire, after creating an airline company staffed by bikini-clad flight attendants. Thao's wealth is soon set to exceed $1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire's Index, with the majority of her wealth derived from her airline company VietJet and real estate holdings in Ho Chi-Min City.
VietJet is known for staffing its inaugural flights to beach destinations with attractive female flight attendants wearing bikinis, who also feature in the company's calendar and publicity campaigns.

In an interview, Thao said the company was empowering to women in a culture dominated by conservative values. "You have the right to wear anything you like, either the bikini or the traditional ao dai," she said, referring to the traditional long tunic. "We don't mind people associating the airline with the bikini image. If that makes people happy, then we are happy," Thao told Bloomberg.

The country's only privately owned airline, VietJet is expected to become Vietnam's biggest domestic carrier in 2016, according to CAPA Centre for Aviation.

Thao made her first million at 21 by trading fax machines and latex rubber and, with VietJet about to go public, her wealth will soon be boosted to $1.37 billion (£960 million), according to the report.

The company, which accounts for a 30 per cent share of the market, flies to 47 locations in Vietnam and Asia, including Seoul, Bangkok and Singapore.

Mermaid 'Ate' Holy Monk

Jelly Lin the Mermaid
The Mermaid with Stephen Chow

Jelly Lin, the 19-year-old star of the Chinese New Year hit The Mermaid, was reported to be in a serious relationship with Feng Shaofeng, the 37-year-old star who plays Xuanzang in another festive film, The Monkey King 2.

Although previous rumours of the romance had been written off as stunts to generate publicity for the movies, Chinese online media company I Am Paparazzi said today that the relationship is real, and published its proof, including a video of the couple.

It said it caught the pair together more than once, including at a meeting with Feng's father at a tax office in the actor's native Shanghai, on Feb 6, two days before Chinese New Year.

On Feb 7, Lin, a native of Huzhou, Zhejiang province, shared photos of a reunion dinner on Weibo, but she deleted them after she was alleged to have been in Feng's kitchen, said NetEase website.

The couple have been together since May last year, around the time Feng and actress Ni Ni annouced their amicable break-up, said I Am Paparazzi.

Lin is the latest star being launched by comic Stephen Chow, after actresses including Cecilia Cheung to Kitty Zhang.

Feng is the star of television dramas such as King Of Lan Ling (2013) and films such as Wolf Totem (2015).

How to Date Jolin Tsai

Jolin Tsai started recording music since she was a teenager in the 1990s - putting herself on our radar in 2003 with Magic, her fifth studio album, which sold over 1.5 million copies in Asia and earned her the distinction of being Taiwan's best-selling female singer.

Following this, the pop princess secured her A-list status with a string of Chinese hit albums - Castle, J-game, Dancing Diva, Agent J - with each one achieving Asian sales of over 2 million copies.

She even explored her crazier side in Play, the title track off her latest studio album, which thrust her back in the spotlight (although the album's last song, We're All Different, Yet The Same, can also claim the dubious honour of achieving as much when it made headlines for being censored in Singapore).

And yet, despite the fact that Jolin practically grew up in public (as we all do these days with social media) and studied English literature at university, she has revealed precious little behind her tightly managed image (and tight costumes) outside of her homeland.

So when the Jolin Tsai 2015 Play World Tour stopped by Singapore for a one-night-only extravaganza, we took the opportunity to ask the 35-year-old about dating etiquette and what she looks for in a man. As it happens, it contrasts with her public image much more than we'd expect.

There's no ideal type
"Romance can be difficult to make sense of. Sometimes it just feels right, which may be the key to finding a partner. My kind of guy is someone who is honest and kind-hearted. He doesn't need to be ripped, but he does need to have hobbies, an active lifestyle and an interest in health. That's because I usually exercise at least three days a week."

You'll have to compete with her career...
"I see both career and love life as equally important. Relationships should be based on mutual trust and interdependence, and at the same time allow both of us to have our personal space."

...and her friends too
"When there's some downtime, I'll take the chance to catch up or party with my friends. I also turn to my friends when I'm feeling down."

Filial piety isn't out of date
"Among all the characteristics a man can have, filial piety stands out as an attractive trait that women will want in men."

Exude confidence, not arrogance
"How confident you are determines your sex appeal. But I dislike rude and arrogant guys."

Don't leave romance to chance
"I believe in fate. But I also believe that love is a process between two people, understanding each other better to make the relationship work. While there may be no such thing as a perfect relationship, what's important is for a couple to have that goal in mind and work towards achieving that."

Chou Tzu-yu Outraged China

Chou Tzu-yu, a Taiwanese, is now embroiled in a controversy after she waved Taiwan's official flag on a recent online broadcast, earning the ire of Chinese online users, who insinuated that she had a sinister pro-Taiwan independence agenda.

Immediately after the backlash, the visibly weary teenager appeared in a Youtube video apologising for her actions. The video, published on Friday (Jan 15), has since been viewed nearly 3 million times.

Many Taiwanese have reacted unfavourably to the wrath of Chinese online users, with Taiwan's presidential candidates wading into the row, defending the young K-pop starlet.

Online users in Taiwan said that Chou's apology was produced under immense pressure, and it was tantamount to bullying and intimidation by China.

According to AFP, a Chinese TV channel had cancelled an upcoming show featuring Chou's K-pop band TWICE. Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has also withdrawn advertisements featuring Chou in the South Korean market.

Who is this girl who has caused all this online chatter?
1) Chou was born in Tainan, Taiwan on June 14, 1999.

2) According to a fan page dedicated to Chou, the Taiwanese was talent scouted to Korea in Dec 2012 as a JYP Entertainment trainee after a talent scout was impressed by her performance in an online video clip. JYP Entertainment is one of South Korea's largest record labels, and counts artists like Wonder Girls and 2AM in its stable.

3) The 16-year-old was recruited into K-pop band TWICE after surviving a reality show, Sixteen, created by JYP Entertainment and Mnet that premiered May 5, 2015, and ended on July 7, 2015.

4) Out of 16 contestants on the reality TV show, nine were chosen to form TWICE. The contestants came from five countries: Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Chou placed 8th among the 16 contestants.

5) TWICE was initially meant to be a seven-member K-pop group. During the final episode of Sixteen, JYP Entertainment announced that TWICE will be a nine-member group. Chou was nearly eliminated from Sixteen, but survived thanks to votes from online audiences, thus inducting her as a member of TWICE.

6) Chou, together with her multi-national K-pop girl group, made its debut on Oct 20, 2015 with a mini-album The Story Begins.

7) Within two months after their debut, Chou's TWICE awarded Best New Female Artist at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards, an annual major K-pop music awarding ceremony.
