They say that age is just a number.

Indeed, it is the case for some very lucky female celebrities in Asia, who were screen sirens and popular singers during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Gigi Lai and Christy Chung have already hit the big 4-0 but they look like they haven't aged a day.

Chung, 45, proves that she's still got it when her 33-year-old actor beau Zhang Lunshuo proposed to her during the latest taping of a Chinese dating show.

She said 'yes' of course, and broke the hearts of middle-aged men all over Asia.

Taiwan actress Ruby Lin, 40, also recently announced that she has been dating her longtime friend, Wallace Huo, who is four years her junior.

While naysayers suggest that these ladies could have gotten some work done over the years, it is undeniable that they are still smokin' hot even in their 40s.

And how can we not include our very own homegrown actresses who continue to defy mother nature despite their age? If only we knew their beauty secrets.

Find out who made our list of gorgeous Asian female celebrities in their 40s.

It is even more unbelievable that some of them look better than ever before. Sammi Cheng looks more refined and elegant compare to the first time she stepped on stage performing. Kelly Chen and Shu Qi both as pretty as before while Michelle Reis simply looked stunning at the age of 45. And who could believe that the Taiwanese goddess Lin Chi Ling is already 41 years old? And what about Athena Chu? She used to be raw and have darker complexion but look at her now, more gorgeous than before.

My favourite of all has to be Sharla Cheung who played pivotal female characters in most of Stephen Chow's earlier movies. She looked pretty then but is more gorgeous now.

One can't help but wonder what are the secrets of these goddesses to their youth. Is it simply the science of plastic surgery or something deeper like happiness and emotional positiveness?

Chen Zihan Marries To Dai Xiangyu

Actor Dai Xiangyu, who rose to fame for his role as Yamamoto Yousuke in the 2008 Channel 8 blockbuster series The Little Nyonya, will marry Chinese actress Chen Zihan in December this year.

Dai, 31, proposed to the Chen, 38, on Wednesday (May 18), reports The Straits Times.

According to The New Paper, they have been dating for about a year and registered their marriage today.

He told the media over the phone from Beijing in Mandarin: "We feel that the time has come for us to be married."

He recalls the moment that she said yes: "She was very touched with my proposal, because I had her family and friends in for the surprise. We're both overjoyed to share the news with everyone."

The two were co-stars in the 2015 Chinese drama, The Girl Wearing Tassel Earrings, but met before working on the show.

"We've been dating for about a year, and we both feel that now is the right time to settle down and have kids," he says.

The wedding will be held in the mainland, but Dai says that he will invite his friends from Mediacorp over to China to celebrate the happy occasion with him.

Kate Pang's Miscarriage

Taiwanese actress-host Kate Pang's miscarriage in between her hosting gigs at Star Awards Show 1 and 2 last year spooked Andie Chen so much that he's treating her second pregnancy with more care, concern and caution.

She's due to give birth to their second child, a girl, next month.

The couple have a son, Aden, who turns two on June 30.

The 30-year-old local actor told The New Paper at yesterday's press conference for If Only I Could: "When my wife was expecting Aden, I wasn't very worried and I kind of took it in an 'everything is going to be fine, nothing is going to happen' attitude.

"But after Kate's miscarriage, it suddenly dawned on me that I shouldn't take this for granted because there are risks involved in every pregnancy for the baby and the mother.

"There's always a little bit of fear in me but hopefully everything is going to be fine."

HOME
When Aden was born at home in Pang's native Taiwan, Chen flew there as quickly as he could from a film shoot in Ipoh, Malaysia.

But this time, Chen will be by Pang's side.

"Kate is giving birth naturally again but I heard that the second time can be quite sudden," he said.

"I will be busy with filming but it will be easier for me to rush over as the shoot is in Singapore."

He added that he will definitely be including his daughter on the couple's parenting site Kandie Network when she is older.

He is also thinking of changing Aden's Instagram handle (@aden_kandie) into a combination of both his kids' names in future.

Singapore's Next Top Model Angie Watkins

She was the only girl chosen among thousands to represent Singapore in the current fourth season of Asia's Next Top Model (AsNTM), the Asian spin-off of US reality TV show America's Next Top Model.

And she would not have had the chance if it hadn't been for The New Paper New Face contest.

After all, it was at the New Face walk-in audition at Bugis+ that AsNTM directors scouted Miss Angie Watkins for their show.

Miss Watkins, a finalist in New Face last year and winner of subsidiary title Miss Cagliari Cosmopolitan, told The New Paper: "I actually wasn't going to audition for New Face. My boyfriend's mother told me to do it or she'd be angry with me so I went ahead. And look where it's taken me... That day literally kick-started everything."

The 20-year-old model added: "For the girls who aren't sure if they should join New Face (this year), they should just go for it...

"When I got off the stage, even before I knew I had made it (through to the next round), I felt so good about myself. I faced my fears by walking on this huge stage with a huge crowd staring at me. The bottom line is, there's no harm in trying."

Fast forward to 2016 and Miss Watkins - whose father is Australian and mother is Chinese Singaporean - is tackling gruelling weekly photo shoots and challenges posed to the 14 finalists on AsNTM.

Unfortunately, she was eliminated in last night's episode and ended up in fifth place.

The remaining girls are Julian Flores (Philippines), Patricia Gunawan (Indonesia), Sang In Kim (Korea) and Jiratchaya "Tawan" Kedkong (Thailand).

The series airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on Star World (StarHub TV Ch 501/Singtel TV Ch 301).

SHOCK
Said Miss Watkins, who started modelling at 14: "I was actually shocked I got so far. When I first joined, I didn't have much confidence in my ability to beat the other girls who were so beautiful and had many more years of modelling experience. I didn't unpack until the fifth week of the competition.

"My goal from the start was not to win, but to not be kicked out the first week."
She has since garnered a fan base with several Instagram pages dedicated to her. Her Facebook page has 4,500 followers, her Instagram account - which had less than 1,000 followers pre-AsNTM - now boasts over 37,000 followers.

But Miss Watkins still has her share of haters. Instagram trolls have left comments on her posts, calling her the "bitchiest girl in the house" due to her outspoken nature.

In one episode, contestants had to don bikinis and have water splashed on them for a photo shoot for skincare brand Neutrogena.

UPSET
Miss Watkins was initially so upset by the two-piece swimsuit she was given that she refused to participate in the shoot - even if it meant getting eliminated from the competition.

She said: "The top I was given was completely see-through.I felt very uncomfortable because the crew were all men, plus millions of (viewers would be) seeing my assets.

"I knew they could censor it for TV, but I just felt uncomfortable because there's a difference between showing cleavage and your entire breasts.

"But I did it because I trusted (AsNTM's Taiwanese-American creative consultant and judge) Yu Tsai, and (editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar Singapore and guest judge of the episode) Kenneth (Goh) told me he would protect my modesty."
It does not help that the slender Miss Watkins - who stands at 1.72m and weighs 45kg - has size 32D breasts, which she claimed have been a hindrance on the job.

She said: "Sometimes things will fit my shoulders and waist nicely, but at the chest area, the buttons will be popping (out) or something, which sucks because sample sizes are fixed.

"It makes it difficult because my chest is just a completely different size from the rest of my body, and it makes clothes look weird on me.

"It's good and bad though. For bridal photo shoots, it's perfect because I can hold the dress up, but (my figure) doesn't really suit high fashion. (The art directors) like the model (to be) flat-chested."

Now that her AsNTM stint is over, Miss Watkins, who is signed to Basic Models Management, hopes to further her modelling career overseas next year.

Her dream job would be walking the runway at a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
"I have boobs, so why not?" she said playfully.

JUDGE TOLD HER OFF FOR SPEAKING UP
In one episode, she couldn't help but speak out about creative consultant-judge Yu Tsai, who tends to shout at the contestants.

She was distracted by his methods and found him intimidating.

During the judging session, in front of the other judges and participants, she told him "maybe a little less shouting" would help.

Her remarks angered Yu Tsai, who immediately said: "Oh no, you're done with me today. You don't get to tell me what to do, when to do it and how to do it."

Miss Watkins then realised her mistake and tearfully apologised.

She said: "I regret the way I said it as it came across as very rude, but that was not my intention whatsoever.

"Although I shouldn't have said it, it made our relationship stronger in the long run... After the incident, it hit me that I'm just a model and I shouldn't be saying these kinds of things."

HOW TO JOIN
Now in its 24th year, The New Paper New Face has been the first step towards a career for many women.

Rebecca Lim Is Too Busy For Social Activities

Drink a lot of water, take beauty supplements and always apply sunscreen.

This is Singaporean actress Rebecca Lim's beauty advice to all young women.

The 28-year-old was at the launch of beauty brand SK-II's newest product, R.N.A. (Radical New Age) Power, at Changi Airport on July 15.

The local actress, who loves winter fashion, revealed at a press conference that she wears no make-up on her flights when she travels.

Her biggest skincare concerns are tired eyes, fine lines and dehydrated skin. How then does the 1.67m tall celebrity take good care of her skin?

"I always apply sunscreen, even if I'm going to walk my dog for just five minutes," she said.

Lim, who looked angelic in a sleeveless white dress at the event, was spotted with visibly clear and radiant skin. Her busy lifestyle and jet-setting schedule do not seem to take a toll on her too.

In an e-mail interview with AsiaOne, she said that she has "grown to be confident in (her) own skin" even though being an actress puts her "under more scrutiny".

So has her radiant complexion scored her a date?

"I have been so busy at work I hardly have time for any social activities. But I definitely feel comfortable enough in my skin and I hope my date feels comfortable in his as well," she said in the interview.

On what advice she gives to young women, the actress said that all women should be happy and happiness is "sadly underrated". She also advises them to settle any disputes before going to bed and not bear an overnight grudge.

"To be happy with your loved ones and treasure your time together is what I can say. For work, always work hard and constantly improve yourself. Never feel that you are too good for something. Always be prepared and always be punctual," she said.
